We all met at 11 am at Adrianou Street at the entrance of the Ancient market’s archaeological site. Then through the Panathinea street the children went on a tour of the Attalos tunnel. During the two hours that the tour lasted the children experienced life at the heart of the Agora, the ancient marketplace, the heart of public life in Ancient Greek cities. They also visited the museum, the Byzantine church of Agioi Apostoloi as well as the courthouse of Iliaia, the place where Socrates was tried. It then went on towards the administrative centre of the marketplace: Vouleftirion, Archives, Pritaneio and the temple of Ifestos.

All the children seemed to be enjoying the tour to the heart of the ancient centre. They remained focused throughout the tour asking questions about terms such as “Democracy ,Culture and participation in public matters”, showing an intense interest to learn about the secrets of life in ancient Athens and the culture of Athenians while enjoying a relaxing, educational stroll in these beautiful surroundings.

In total 28 children participated coming from the SOS Children’s village in Vari, the Christodoulio Institution and the Girls’ home Agios Alexandros. With them came 7 escorts of the institutions as well as EXELIXI ZOIS’s members.

The tour was given by Mr. Vagelis Pappas, an artist, and lasted for approximately two hours.

The lunch box offered to the participants was kindly donated by the “Dipnosofistirion” catering service.

The NGO EXELIXI ZOIS was founded in March 2018 and is aimed at minors and adults of adolescent or post adolescent age, coming from closed child protection institutions. Our aim at EXELIXI ZOIS is to take care of young people aged 12-17 as well as care for those 18-25 who have left or are leaving institutional care. Our actions aim to ensure that the passage from one age group to another is done smoothly and that at the same time these young people have all the support, practical and psychological, to be able to claim a better future and face tomorrow with confidence.
